CFH-GC. Benjamin MALTBY, b. June 30, 1796, Hatfield, Mass. (Isaac 4, Benj.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). m. Oct. 22, 1828, Mary WARNER, of Hatfield. (From "The Buffalo Express")
"Obituary"
"The Hon. Benjamin Maltby, one of the pioneer citizens of the southern part of Erie County, a venerable man, honored and respected by all who knew him, has just passed away from the earth at the advanced age of eighty-six years.
The place of his birth was Hatfield, Mass. Many years ago he removed to what is now the Township of Colden--having made a purchase there with his brother-in-law, Judge Love of Buffalo, of 15,000 acres of land.
For many years Mr. Maltby was a successful merchant at Glenwood, having chosen that romantic spot as the place of his residence when it was a wilderness.
His uniform kindness and urbanity, together with honorable and upright dealing made him friends of all classes of customers.
He represented his district in the Legislature one term, being elected by a large majority--the opposing candidate receiving only fifteen votes.
Mr. Maltby did much for the improvement of the town in its early history, engaging largely in the buildings of roads. He was also a liberal supporter of the Church with which he was connected, and an active and faithful worker.
The last years of his life he has spent in quiet retirement.
He was a venerable man in appearance, a man of large intelligence, agreeable and instructive in conversation, always cheerful and hopful.
In October, 1878, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding which was largely attended by relatives and friends.
Mr. Maltby reached the end of a long and useful life without a stain upon his character, and his body is laid beside those of his children. He leaves a wife and one son and daughter. Four of his sisters also survive him--Mrs. Chaping of Chicago--Mrs. Love, now of Japan,--Mrs. Fairchild of Waterloo, and Mrs. Salter of Buffalo.
Had he lived to the last day of June next, he would have completed eighty-seven years of life."
